New Economy Canada Responds to BC Budget 2024

February 22, 2024

(Victoria, B.C.) In response to the BC Government’s release of Budget 2024, Merran Smith, President at New Economy Canada released the following statement:

“The global shift to a clean economy is happening now, and today’s budget, along with BC Hydro’s recently announced $36 billion plan to expand the province’s electricity grid, shows the government is serious about telling investors who want to put their money behind industries powered by clean energy and technology that BC’s open for business.”

“Specifically, budget measures that provide rebates for low- and middle-income households to purchase heat pumps will help more British Columbians access the lowcost, clean energy they need to heat their homes and fuel electric vehicles. Meanwhile, new funding to get more public charging stations built is good news for people and businesses who are considering EVs as the best means to get around the province affordably, reliably and with a lower carbon footprint.”

“Importantly, we’re also excited about measures to establish a new First Nations Equity Financing Framework which is going to help maximize the outsized role First Nations can and will play in building the new economy as business owners and partners.”

“Looking ahead, New Economy Canada urges the BC government to remain laser-focused on putting the building blocks in place to help British Columbians compete and win. To do so, the province must deliver smart and robust energy planning, expand our clean electricity grid and related infrastructure, streamline permitting processes and give all British Columbians the clean energy and tools they need to prosper.”
